Director of Design for Studio

Reports To: Studio Director

Supervises: Studio members/assigned project personnel

Knowledge/Skills:

  • Understanding of design firm management
  • Understanding of team financial goals
  • Assists with bringing in projects to support goals
  • Keen design sense and detail oriented
  • Understanding of legal issues affecting design firms
  • Excellent design and design mentoring skills
  • Thorough knowledge of building codes
  • Experienced in project budgeting, schedules, and phasing of consultants
  • May have extra accreditation/certifications/licenses that allow him/her to share his/her knowledge with the studio
  • The skill set to guide teams through both high and low budget projects
  • Expert on furniture, products, and procurement process
  • Ability to solve complex design issues for his/her team that come up during design and construction

Responsibilities:

  • Takes leadership role in the studio on issues of design and project execution
  • Acts as a resource to studio members on issues of design and project execution
  • Assists the Studio Director in developing staffing schedules and priorities for executing the work of the studio
  • Mentors studio members on issues of design trends and standards of practice
  • Assists the project team in managing all design phases of the project
  • Along with the design team, communicates with client and manages client expectations
  • Ensures the highest level of design and solving complex design issues
  • Stays on top of new product information and materials and guides team through mindful selections

Required Years of Experience: 8+

Required Education: Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Design or Architecture
